ATNS awarded CANSO GreenATM Environmental accreditation

Despite coming under fire for lapsed navigation approach procedures as well as having its CEO suspended, South Africa’s Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) has been awarded Level 2 CANSO GreenATM Environmental Accreditation.

The CANSO GreenATM programme was launched in 2022.

It is an environmental accreditation programme providing air navigation service providers (ANSPs) with independent, industry-endorsed, accreditation of their environmental efforts.

Through the programme, ANSPs are assessed on how they facilitate minimising excess emissions in their airspace.

Their efforts to reduce direct environmental footprint are also assessed.

GreenATM covers various topics related to governance and policy, ground and terminal and en route operations, infrastructure, and procurement practices.

ANSPs are assessed against five defined levels for each topic.

GreenATM thus provides an objective validation of an ANSP’s efforts to increase sustainability and environmental management.

In doing so, this enhances credibility with the public and other stakeholders.

The accreditation reflects ATNS’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

It is indeed the first time that an African Air Navigation Service Provider has received the award.

By highlighting the areas an ANSP can positively influence its environmental footprint and that of its customers, it reveals a path to higher ambition and provides a framework for engagement with stakeholders and employees on climate action, which helps identify priorities and stimulate future activity.

Through GreenATM, ANSPs can showcase their organisation’s positive initiatives and the beneficial impacts they are having – while highlighting the ATM industry’s efforts to continuously improve its environmental efforts.

As participation in the accreditation programme grows, best practices will be uncovered and shared across the industry.

This will inspire coordinated action between ANSPs enabling delivery of initiatives that will greatly benefit the environment.
