Review of transit through Bahrain International Airport

I had the opportunity to experience Bahrain International Airport late last month.

Though, I was not particularly looking forward to the visit – as I faced a connection of more than ten hours between flights – the airport exceeded my expectations.

I arrived in Bahrain from Southeast Asia just before midnight on a Gulf Air flight that landed almost an hour ahead of schedule.

After leaving the aircraft, I entered a spacious terminal with wide walkways and efficient travelators leading to the transfer area.

Staff at the transfer desk were friendly and helpful, directing passengers to the security screening area before being allowed access to the departure area upstairs.

A Welcoming Space

The first thing that struck me was the airport’s architecture and design. Rather than feeling like a conventional airport, the space felt bespoke and welcoming. I even felt like I had entered a bespoke gallery.

Clean lines, soft lighting and calming colours and open spaces complimented by beautiful artwork created a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.

One feature that particularly impressed me was the seating. Instead of the usual rows of metal or plastic airport chairs, Bahrain International Airport offers a wide range of comfortable seating options.

There are day chairs, chaise longues, tables with high chairs, armchairs as well as conventional seating.

These comfortable seats make it easy to relax or even enjoy a short sleep without needing access to an airline lounge.

As the main hub for Gulf Air, Bahrain’s national carrier, the airport operates a classic hub-and-spoke network, connecting passengers travelling between destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

This creates a constant flow of transit passengers, many of whom spend several hours in the terminal between flights.

Dining Options

The airport offers a selection of international retail brands and restaurants, including Jamie Oliver’s Kitchen. While the choice is more limited than at mega-hubs such as Dubai or Doha, there is still enough variety for most travellers.

Because of my lengthy connection, Gulf Air provided me with a meal voucher that could be used at outlets in the Food Garden. The food court includes Burger King, McDonald’s, Upper Crust, a waffle outlet and several other dining options.

I chose a freshly prepared baguette and an iced tea from Upper Crust, which made for a satisfying meal during my wait.

The flight information displays were another highlight. Large, bright and strategically positioned throughout the terminal, they were easy to read from a considerable distance without needing to walk closer.

What impressed me most was the overall atmosphere. Compared with many airports I have visited across Africa and Europe, Bahrain International Airport is truly in a class of its own.

Although different in character from the vast hubs of Dubai and Doha, it possesses a distinctive appeal. The terminal feels thoughtfully curated rather than purely functional.

Design Elements

The colour palette, textured carpets, soft furnishings, abundant natural light and carefully placed seating combine to create a remarkable sense of calm.

Even when several flights arrived simultaneously and the departure lounge became busier with transfer passengers, the terminal never felt crowded or chaotic.

Every aspect of the design appears to have been planned with passenger comfort in mind. The lighting, artwork, spacious layout and quality furnishings create an environment where travellers feel valued rather than simply processed through another airport.

Bahrain International Airport may not be the largest airport in the Gulf, but it is undoubtedly one of the most pleasant.

Combining modern facilities with elegant design and genuine comfort, it transforms even a long layover into an enjoyable experience. It is an airport I would happily transit through again.
