United Airlines will increase overhead bin space on its Embraer E175 regional jets.

The enlarged luggage compartments will feature on 50 of the carrier’s aircraft by the end of this year.

However, the airline plans for the new arrangement to be on 150 of its Embraer E175s by 2026.

MORE SPACE FOR CABIN BAGGAGE

Consequently, the new storage bins will allow 80% more space for cabin baggage than they currently do.

According to Airdatanews, this will enable flights to accommodate 29 extra carry-on bags.

LESS CHECKED BAGGAGE FOR UNITED AIRLINES

There is a global trend for travellers to bring less baggage on flights.

Many passengers only bring cabin baggage on flights. This is often because of delays and the cost of bringing checked baggage on certain flights.

Furthermore, United estimates that the change will eliminate the need for approximately 1 million passengers to bring checked baggage on flights each year.

FUEL BURN

Less baggage means lighter planes. The lighter an aircraft is, the less fuel it burns. This is good news for the environment.

Ultimately, the initiative will help the airline to improve its sustainability targets since less checked baggage means lighter planes and thus lower carbon emissions.

UNITED AIRLINES CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

United says that passengers are pleased with the initiative as the airline is seeing higher satisfaction from passengers.

“Customer sentiment for the new overhead bins and signature interiors has been extremely positive. By helping to eliminate the need to gate check bags, we are seeing an increase in gate and boarding satisfaction.”

REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SERVICES

United will offer larger overhead baggage storage bins on its Embraer E175 aircraft, operating on both regional and international routes.

That said, the innovation is already benefitting United’s passengers.

“This is just the latest way we’re working to create an industry-leading experience for all our customers – whether they’re on an international or regional flight.”
