Air New Zealand has signed its largest deal for the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Finland’s Neste.
This is in a bid to help the airline reach net-zero targets.
SAF PRODUCER NESTE
Neste and Air New Zealand have signed an agreement for the supply of nine million litres of neat Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
This agreement represents the largest purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Neste made by any airline outside North America and Europe, for delivery before the end of 2024.
Moreover, Air New Zealand expects SAF to make up to 20% of its fuel requirements by 2030.
SAF PRODUCTION
The sustainable aviation fuel will be produced at Neste’s Singapore refinery, which last year expanded its SAF production capacity.
“Neste is fully committed to supporting the decarbonisation of aviation and is working closely together with partners like Air New Zealand to accelerate SAF usage.”

SAF SHORTAGE
For aviation to reach its net zero carbon emissions goals by 2050, the production of SAF needs to be ramped up.
Sustainable aviation fuel is currently the only solution to significantly reduce emissions from long-haul flights.
Although, SAF currently makes up less than 1% of the global fuel supply.
SAF SOLUTIONS
Sustainable aviation fuels are key to achieving reductions in carbon emissions.
While the aviation sector contributes around 2% of global carbon emissions, it seeks to reduce its carbon footprint through various measures.
The use of cleaner fuel (SAF) is one of these.
AIR NEW ZEALAND CONNECTIVITY
Airlines like Air New Zealand operate many exceptionally lengthy long-haul flights. This contributes to increased carbon emissions.
However, for societies and economies to thrive, air connectivity is key.
Thus, airlines must implement solutions to ensure their operations are environmentally sustainable.
“Decarbonising Air New Zealand’s operations is essential for its long-term ability to connect New Zealanders to the world, as well as support the country’s trade and tourism sectors, and SAF is a key enabler of this.”
Dame Therese Walsh, Chair, Air New Zealand
AIR NEW ZEALAND
The neat SAF ordered by Air New Zealand will be blended with conventional jet fuel to meet the required fuel specifications.
Reuters reports that SAF will be supplied to Los Angeles International Airport between 1 April and 30 November, for use by Air New Zealand.
“We are proud to support Air New Zealand’s decarbonization focus and are looking forward to continuing working together with Air New Zealand and the New Zealand Government to reach their climate goals.”
