Somalia’s national carrier, Somalia Airlines, is set stage a comeback with a relaunch of flights in the next two months.
The news of the airline making a comeback comes after Somalia’s Transport Minister Mohamed Farah said that the Somali government has ordered two Airbus A320 aircraft.
These narrow-body aircraft will enable the airline to relaunch services on a handful of routes.
The country’s national airline last operated domestic and international flights more than 30 years ago, according to TRT Global.
In 1991 it discontinued scheduled operations due to ongoing conflict in the war-torn country.
Founded in 1964, Somali Airlines once connected Mogadishu to cities across East Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
In 2018, Somalia reached a key aviation milestone after resuming full control of its airspace, which until then was under the control of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Farah said that the acquisition of two aircraft indeed symbolizes a new era for Somalia, which is intent on restoring its civil aviation sector while rebuilding the country.
“This isn’t just about two new Airbus A320s acquired today; it’s a powerful symbol of our nation’s incredible journey of resilience, rebuilding, and renewed national pride,” Farah said.
With many Somali nationals living outside of the country’s borders, safe and regular airline operations are necessary.
“It will provide crucial direct connectivity for our vast diaspora, fostering unity and making travel easier for families and businesses alike,” Farah said.
That said, the airline intends to grow its fleet and network. Hence it will need to acquire additional aircraft in the future.
Somalia Airlines would thus be in the market for additional aircraft for international routes. These could even be wide-body aircraft for long-haul routes.
“This is just the beginning…. We’ve acquired two, and we’ll acquire two or three more and add more, so they can compete with other airlines. “ He said.
The relaunch of reliable air services could significantly improve Somalia’s reputation.
Furthermore, it will enhance connectivity, boost economic growth and restore pride in the nation’s aviation industry.
