Air Tanzania will introduce scheduled flights between Johannesburg and Zanzibar from next month.
The airline will offer two weekly flights between Johannesburg and Zanzibar from June 10. Flights will operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
This is good news for the tourism sector as it offers improved connectivity between the island of Zanzibar and Johannesburg, which is a gateway to many of South Africa’s premier tourist attractions.
Zanzibar, located off the East Coast of Africa is a perennial favourite for European and South African tourists. The new service indeed gives travellers more choice when travelling between South Africa and Zanzibar.
AIR TANZANIA’S JOHANNESBURG ZANZIBAR FLIGHTS
The service will, however, operate as a triangular routing, with Zanzibar being an additional stop on the existing Dar es Salaam service.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the flight will depart Dar es Salaam at 10h45 arriving in Johannesburg at 13h15.
The flight then departs Johannesburg at 14h15, arriving in Zanzibar at 18h45. The return flight departs Zanzibar at 19h35, arriving in Dar es Salaam at 20h05.
South Africa’s budget carrier, FlySafair, also operates flights between Johannesburg and Zanzibar. In fact, it serves the route twice a week with a Boeing 737 aircraft.
JOHANNESBURG – DAR ES SALAAM SERVICES
Air Tanzania commenced scheduled flights between Johannesburg and Dar es Salaam flights in November last year.
It offers this route five flights a week. Services are operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The airline operates this route with various aircraft including Boeing 787 and Boeing 737 aircraft. It also deploys an Airbus A220 aircraft on the route on Saturdays.
The A220 is purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market, it delivers fuel efficiency and widebody comfort in a single-aisle aircraft.
Air Tanzania was the first airline in Africa to take delivery of an Airbus A220 aircraft. This was back in 2018.
